Butyl-isoprene-isobutene rubber

Butyl-isoprene-isobutene rubber, often referred to as butyl rubber, is a copolymer made from isobutylene and isoprene. This special combination gives butyl rubber unique material properties.

Chemical structure

Butyl-isoprene-isobutene rubber (IIR) represents a unique class of synthetic elastomers produced by the copolymerization of isobutene with a small amount of isoprene. The resulting chemical structure is characterized by the branching of isobutene chains with the double bonds present in isoprene.

This structure gives IIR its characteristic material properties.

Material properties and resistance

  • very good mechanical properties, high elasticity and good electrical insulation properties

  • resistant to water, oxygen, ozone and UV as well as to acids and bases

  • is characterized by its incomparable gas impermeability and high flexibility

  • excellent stretching properties even at low temperatures

  • Temperature resistance: -40°C to 130°C

IIR has excellent elongation, tear strength and resistance to many chemical substances, especially acids, alkalis and oxidizing agents. It shows good resistance to weathering and ozone and good electrical and thermal insulation properties, making it attractive for applications in the electrical industry. Above all, butyl is characterized by its gas impermeability and flexibility. flexibility The polymeric properties of IIR give it high flexibility. This makes the material ideal for applications where good formability and elasticity are required, such as in the production of seals and hoses. Tear resistance Good tear resistance makes butyl resistant to mechanical stress. Wear resistance Ideal for products that are subject to high levels of wear and stretch, such as inflation hoses. density IIR has a low density, resulting in lighter end products. Particularly relevant for applications where weight reduction is important. Insulation properties Good electrical insulation properties make IIR suitable for applications in the electrical industry. Thermal insulation properties enable use in various temperature environments. Gas permeability IIR features particularly low gas permeability, making it a preferred material for applications where gas barriers are critical. This makes IIR particularly suitable for the production of tire inner tubes, for example. Weather resistance Good weather resistance, minimal aging due to UV radiation. Chemical resistance General resistance to many chemicals, especially acids and bases. Suitable for applications in chemically demanding environments. Temperature resistance Good heat resistance allows use in elevated temperature applications. Maintains mechanical properties over a wide temperature range.

Material hardness and coloring

IIR is available in different hardness levels, ranging from soft (30° Shore A) to harder types (over 80° Shore A). This versatility allows it to be adapted to a wide range of applications, from flexible seals to rigid structures. In terms of color schemes, IIR is usually available in a variety of black, gray or brown. Color options may be limited compared to some other elastomers.

Industries and applications

Butyl Isoprene Isobutene Rubber (IIR) is a versatile elastomer with outstanding resistance to chemicals, weathering, gases and water. Its applications extend across various industries, including the tire industry, pharmaceutical industry, electrical industry, sealing technology, automotive industry as well as

Aerospace.

Tire industry IIR finds application in tire production, especially for inner tubes due to its low gas permeability, which leads to improved tire air retention. Pharmaceutical industry Due to its water vapor resistance, IIR is used in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of plugs, closures and seals. Electrical industry IIR is used in the electrical industry for the production of cable insulation and electrical seals. Sealing technology Due to its resistance to chemicals, IIR is used in seals for pipelines, valves and chemical plants. Automotive industry In addition to tires, IIR finds application in the automotive industry for seals, hoses and vibration-damping components. Aerospace IIR is used in the aerospace industry for gaskets and seals due to its resistance to extreme temperatures and vacuum.

In summary, butyl isoprene rubber is popular due to its unique combination of low gas permeability, long-lasting flexibility, good weather and chemical resistance as well

insulating properties make it an outstanding choice in various industrial applications.
